Associate Professor of Computer and Information Science, Janyl Jumadinova, discussed ways to improve computer science education with IEEE Spectrum, the largest professional organization dedicated to engineering and applied science.
Jumadinova states that it’s time for a national policy to be implemented as a requirement for high schoolers, citing that introducing computer science to students earlier in their education promotes problem-solving, creativity, and digital literacy. Additionally, she notes that this type of reform cannot be achieved without increased investment in qualified teachers, according to a 2024 Code.org report, and infrastructure.
Bridging the computer science gap not only helps meet the demand of a skilled workforce but also offers students the tools to succeed throughout their lives.
