What to Expect During Your Four Years

Years 1 and 2: Your Major/Minor Combination

  • Learn how to think creatively, communicate clearly, and question everything.
  • Try out whatever interests you through our advising sequence.
  • Declare your major and select your mentor by sophomore year.
  • Choose a minor from a different academic division to keep your mind wide open and your perspectives fresh.

Year 3: Focus On Your Field

  • Develop an even sharper understanding of your chosen major and minor.
  • Improve your research skills and rhetorical ability to prepare for your senior comp. Our award-winning research program is available to you throughout your undergraduate experience.

Year 4: Start Your Senior Comp

  • Alongside your classmates, get busy researching, proposing, creating, and defending an original creative or critical project.
  • Collaborate with a mentor who will oversee your Senior Comp project from its first moments to when you walk across that stage.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Since the College’s first commencement in 1821, Allegheny students have showcased their exceptional academic achievements through a senior capstone experience of one kind or another. At times it involved an oral defense, at others a written thesis.
