About Campus Safety

The Department of Public Safety aims to protect the Allegheny College community through preventive measures and community-oriented policing.

Public Safety’s jurisdiction covers the entire Allegheny College campus including off-campus activities such as field trips, class meetings off campus, etc. There are currently 14 sworn police officers, 5 communication officers (dispatchers), and 2 resource officers operating 24/7. Each police officer is certified under Pennsylvania Act 120 Municipal Police Academy.

Public Safety Goals

  • To ensure the personal safety of all College constituencies and protection of all College facilities and equipment.
  • To support a campus culture that values the diverse backgrounds of all College constituencies.
  • To establish a community-oriented department where Public Safety staff work together with the campus community on many issues. This would involve training with the officers/dispatchers, student organizations, College administration, College staff, and faculty.

About the ALERTAllegheny Notification System

ALERTAllegheny is the Allegheny College emergency notification system. It delivers time-sensitive emergency notifications via email, text messaging, website alerts, social media (Facebook and X), and outdoor warning sirens to members of the Allegheny community.

The College automatically registers all allegheny.edu email addresses into the ALERTAllegheny (e2campus) system. Students, staff, faculty, and parents may opt in to the alert system when entering cell phone and email information.

Reporting an Incident

If you are the target of, witness to, or hear about any form of incident or bias happening to an Allegheny student, report the incident immediately. These reports can be anonymous and assist the College in tracking, investigating, or responding to incidents.

Reporting a Crime

If you witness a crime in progress, immediately call Public Safety at 814-332-3357 or Ext. 3357 and provide the location and manner of the crime and your phone number. Public Safety personnel will respond and will call city of Meadville police for immediate assistance if necessary. Do not hang up until the emergency operator tells you to do so. Remain at the location until an officer contacts you unless it is not safe to do so.

Annual Security and Fire Report

The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 (also known as the Jeanne Clery Act) requires Allegheny College to disclose the Annual Security and Fire Report. This report highlights crime statistics for the previous 3 years, safety and awareness programming, student conduct information, policies, and other information on campus crime and incidents.

The 2024 Annual Security and Fire Report includes statistics for 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Crime and Fire Log

The Public Safety Department maintains a Daily Crime and Fire Log that records any crimes that occur on campus or in a non-campus building or property. It includes the nature of the crime/fire, date the incident is reported, date and time of occurrence, and the general location of each reported incident, as well as the disposition if known.

Media Calls

During an emergency situation, it is very important that reporters be directed to Media Relations in the Office of College Relations. Media Relations speaks on behalf of the College and has the most accurate and up-to-date information available about an incident. In addition, Media Relations works closely with Public Safety and Emergency Responders to coordinate what information can or should be released to the general public.

If you receive any calls from media representatives, direct all calls to Media Relations at 814-332-4793 or news@alleghney.edu. To assist Media Relations in responding as quickly as possible, you may also obtain the following information and give it to Media Relations:

  • Reporter’s name and phone number
  • Media organization they represent
  • Type of information they are seeking
  • Reporter’s deadline
