Learning Outcomes

Our Expectation

Upon graduation, we expect you to be a capable and farsighted leader and a rational and responsible citizen equipped to meet the challenges confronting all society. We expect you to value diversity, individual integrity of thought and action, and the importance of personal rights and freedom in the context of society as a whole. We expect you to know that the same complexities that create the problems and challenges of living also give life its richness.

Our Reasoning

We believe that liberal arts education best develops your individual potential. It enables you to experience and enjoy life to the fullest, enabling your mind to encompass all aspects of the world. Among other benefits, liberal arts education broadens the kinds of careers, interests, and activities that you can — and are likely to — pursue. It develops and encourages the use of your imagination in the creative sense and for solving problems of everyday life. It promotes understanding of others’ aspirations and feelings toward the foundation of constructive relationships.

Our Goal

Allegheny aspires to this academic goal: to develop your mind and teach you how to learn on your own. While factual knowledge is important, no one can master in four years all that is needed for a lifetime. Most important is engaging you in an active learning process that entails not only comprehending facts, but also taking responsibility for their proper use. Allegheny’s educational program is designed so that upon graduation, you are able to:

  • Think critically and creatively
  • Communicate clearly and persuasively as a speaker and writer
  • Invoke multiple ways of understanding to organize and evaluate evidence, and to interpret and make sense of your experiences and the experiences of others
  • Apply your knowledge and learning to engage in informed debate, and to analyze and solve problems

Institutional Research and Data

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness leads Allegheny College’s planning, data collection, and assessment efforts. By knowing exactly where we are as an institution and a culture, we are better able to chart the best path forward.

Working closely with Information Technology Services (ITS), the office crafts data governance policies and procedures, as well as data architecture. Data sets are brought together from systems across campus to research and analyze a wide range of institutional and academic issues, including enrollment and graduation rates, student diversity, and federally and state-mandated reporting, as well as the Common Data Set. This collection of data helps inform decisions and improve the institution.
