Allegheny College students Megan Dennis ’23, Quila Gustave ’24, and Bianca Sanchez ’24 were recently awarded prestigious Gilman International Scholarships to study away.
“Our continued success in the Gilman Scholarship Program should be a point of pride for the entire College community,” Professor Patrick Jackson, senior assistant dean for fellowship advising, says. “Our students are competing on a national scale and coming out on top, that speaks well for the preparation that students are getting here on campus.”
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides financial support for students to study or intern aboard.
Sanchez is an environmental science and sustainability major with a minor in political science. She will be studying at Atenas, Costa Rica, at the School for Field Studies to reconnect with her Central American heritage, gain hands-on environmental research experience, and learn about sustainable resource management and development.
Gustave is an economics major with an international focus and a minor in Chinese. She will be studying in Taiwan at the National Taiwan University to engage in an intensive language program, CET Taiwan. After graduation, Gustave hopes her experience in Taiwan will help prepare her for teaching English abroad and eventually attending graduate school.
Dennis is an international studies and business double major also with a Chinese minor. She is exploring where she will study away using the Gilman International Scholarship.
“They’re not just ready to do the work in class; they’re ready to do the work out in the wider world —
that’s what college is all about,” says Jackson, who encourages any student interested in the Gilman International Scholarship to contact him.
Allegheny College students can study away at over 35 programs in 15 countries, including foreign and domestic locations, which can be credited to major or minor requirements. Plus, when Allegheny students study away on a sponsored program, they can take their institutional and federal financial aid. Knowledge of a foreign language is not a requirement of most programs.
