The Allegheny Front, a Pittsburgh-based public radio program, featured Professor of Environmental Science and Sustainability Rich Bowden earlier this week in an article that explored how impending cuts and consolidations to the U.S Forest Service could change research in the Allegheny National Forest.

Bowden, an expert in forest ecology, explained that parts of the forest have seen significant reductions in foliage due to deer overpopulation — an issue that required extensive research to both understand and amend.

He added that a vibrant understory — the layer of vegetation that grows just above the forest floor — is important for the growth of new trees, which serve countless roles in the ecosystem.
