R.J. Swanson ’24 represents the best qualities shared by Gators – ambition and a bright future. Just one month after graduating from Allegheny College, he will start his career as a rotational analyst within PNC Bank’s finance development program.
Swanson says the Center for Career and Professional Development played a huge role in propelling him toward his path to work at PNC. They helped him with internship applications, refined his resume, and connected him with Jennifer R. Daurora ’99, vice president of rewards and loyalty platforms at PNC Bank, and trustee of Allegheny College. The center additionally provided Swanson with funding, which covered the cost of working as an intern in Pittsburgh for a summer.
“I initially connected with RJ as he progressed through the PNC intern recruitment process. RJ and I stayed connected throughout his internship and discussed ways he could build his network while learning about other lines of business at the bank,” says Daurora. “I continue to be impressed by RJ’s curiosity, interest in learning, and focus on personal development. I am excited to welcome him back to PNC Bank and know he will have a bright future, fueled by the skills he learned during his time at Allegheny.”
As an economics major with minors in communications and political science, Swanson took every opportunity to get engaged on campus and became a fellow for the Center for Business and Economics, serving as an ambassador who mentored younger students and supported the center’s events.
“During my four years, Allegheny College has profoundly impacted me as a person and a student. The College’s rigorous academic environment centered around interdisciplinary learning has enhanced my critical thinking skills and allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation for lifelong learning,” says Swanson.
He also served as president of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, president of the wealth management club, and was a founding member of the golf club.
Swanson reflects that being the president of Delta Tau Delta developed his leadership skills. During his time as president, the chapter received the Hugh Shield Award, a prestigious achievement only given to the top ten ranked chapters in the nation.
Simultaneously, throughout his time in the wealth management club, Swanson can be credited for helping raise $1 million for a student-managed investment fund within the Department of Economics, allowing students to learn about the value of stocks with real assets.
“My biggest takeaway from this lesson is that you can really do anything at Allegheny. This project seemed daunting at first, but it was ultimately successful with the support from the Allegheny faculty and administration,” remarks Swanson.
