Allegheny College has been named one of the top 35 best liberal arts colleges in the nation in Washington Monthly’s 2020 college rankings. Also listed among the top 35 are Amherst, Barnard, Haverford and Swarthmore.

The Washington Monthly rankings are unique in that they recognize not only what colleges do for their students but also what colleges are doing for the country. The rankings rate top liberal arts colleges in the nation based on three broad categories:

  • Social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students)
  • Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s)
  • Service (encouraging students to give something back to society)

“Allegheny College challenges students to think beyond themselves and learn how to delve into society’s most complex problems by exploring them through multiple academic disciplines,” said Hilary L. Link, Ph.D., Allegheny president. “We are honored that Washington Monthly has again recognized Allegheny’s contribution to the public good, which reflects not only the college’s longstanding commitment to making a world-class education accessible to students from a wide range of backgrounds, but also the dedication of our faculty and staff in creating innovative research and service opportunities.”

This marks the eighth consecutive year Allegheny has been featured among the best liberal arts colleges in the nation by Washington Monthly.

Allegheny also has been included this year in the “Fiske Guide to Colleges 2021,” which includes the nation’s “best and most interesting” schools; “The Best 386 Colleges,” the 2021 edition of The Princeton Review’s flagship college guide; and “The Best Value Colleges,” also published by The Princeton Review.
