Aubrey Miller ’23 was awarded a Fulbright fellowship, allowing her to spend a full academic year in South Korea as an English teaching assistant at a secondary school.

Miller was an international studies major focusing on East Asia with a minor in Chinese. She says her previous experience studying away in South Korea and her role as a peer mentor for Culture2Culture, a campus organization that supports international students at Allegheny, influenced her desire to teach abroad.

“I have been interested in teaching English as a foreign language for a few years now, and I have worked with faculty members, including an independent study with another student and Assistant Professor of Education Studies Jennifer Franz, to create a resource for students who would like to get certifications,” says Miller.

Miller further credits Assistant Dean for International Student Services Lenée McCandless, Professor of French and International Studies Laura Reeck, and Professor of Political Science Sharon Wesoky for supporting her interests in international education.

“Aubrey has had a superb four years at Allegheny from start to finish. What has impressed me most is her awesome independence and deep commitment to her field of study in international studies and East Asia,” says Reeck.

McCandless and Franz shared,

“Aubrey is one of the kindest, most generous students we have worked with. She is always willing to lend a helping hand and support others.”

Allegheny College students can study away at over 35 programs in 15 countries through the Office of Global Education, including foreign and domestic locations. Plus, Allegheny students can receive institutional and federal financial aid while studying away in a sponsored program.
