Did you know that Fismes, France and Meadville, Pennsylvania are sister cities with a relationship that dates back to World War I and II? American soldiers were critical in freeing the town from German Occupation, particularly in the Battle of Fismes in 1918.
For over a decade, the city of Fismes has welcomed Allegheny students for a Meadville-Fismes Sister City Internship. Emma Chambers ’24 completed the three-week program, where she learned about the history between the two cities and the inner workings of Fismes.
“Through this internship, I was able to experience France and the culture, while still being able to do the activities I love at Allegheny,” says Chambers, a double major in physics and French with a minor in astronomy. “This experience helped me form connections, get to know people, and improve my French skills. I also learned about the customs, culture, and daily life of the people of Fismes. ”
Former Professor of French and International Studies Laura Reeck, Associate Director of Career Exploration Jim Fitch, and Associate Director of Alumni and Employer Engagement Autumn Parker guided Chambers through the process of applying for the internship.
Parker says, “Emma heavily emphasized her commitment to enhancing her communication and teamwork skills, especially from a global perspective, as it echoes Allegheny’s commitment to preparing students to successfully engage and contribute to an interconnected society.”
“My biggest takeaway is that there is so much more out in the world waiting to be discovered, but the only way you can discover it is if you get out of your comfort zone and take the leap of faith,” says Chambers.
