Allegheny College has once again earned national recognition in U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 Best Colleges rankings, placing among the nation’s top 100 liberal arts institutions and earning high marks for its hands-on, high-impact academic programs.
The digital media company’s annual rankings were released this Tuesday, Sept. 22, and placed Allegheny College at No. 85 among National Liberal Arts Colleges.
Allegheny further distinguished itself by placing highly on lists that included institutions from both the “National Liberal Arts Colleges” and “National Universities” categories. Those rankings include:
- Senior Capstone Projects (No. 10)
- First-Year Experiences (No. 24)
- Writing in the Disciplines (No. 25)
- Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects (No. 29)
- Best Undergraduate Economics Programs (No. 213)
“It’s a tremendous honor for a liberal arts college to receive top marks in such varied categories,” said Provost and Dean of the Faculty Celia Cook-Huffman. “We already know an Allegheny education prepares students for both meaningful careers and exceptional lives based on our robust outcomes, but these accolades are a welcome reinforcement of that data.”
Many of the above national recognitions reflect Allegheny’s longstanding commitment to learning through experience, Cook-Huffman added. The College’s rankings for Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects and Senior Capstone Projects highlight signature elements of the Allegheny experience: deep engagement in a chosen field of study and the substantive application of that gained knowledge through independent work.
Among its peers in the National Liberal Arts Colleges category, Allegheny College retained strong showings in:
- Most Innovative Schools (No. 20)
- Best Undergraduate Teaching (No. 34)
- Best Value Schools (No. 71)
- Top Private Colleges (No. 81)
- Top Performer on Social Mobility (No. 92)
The dedicated, distinctive educational approaches taken by Allegheny’s faculty both in the classroom and as research mentors emerged as a trend in this year’s higher education rankings earlier this summer when The Princeton Review named the College to its list of institutions with the “Most Accessible Professors.”
Although Allegheny College has been included in the “Best Value” rankings for multiple consecutive years, it isn’t resting on its laurels. Earlier this month, the College announced the Allegheny Tuition Promise for PA & OH and Allegheny Impact Scholarship — two new initiatives that expressly limit or eliminate tuition costs.
Vice President for Enrollment Management Jennifer Winge said she’s excited to meet the prospective students who discover Allegheny through its new rankings and offer them an education that doesn’t come with an ambiguous price tag.

U.S. News produces more than 100 different types of numerical rankings and lists that are compiled based on data from over 1,700 Higher Education institutions as well as from federal data repositories. Allegheny College is no stranger to accolades from the digital media company, and has regularly earned top spots on its rankings lists since their inception in 1983.
