Heather Amancio ’23 credits her unusual combinations for preparing her for a career in bringing historical sites to life.

“I feel like I have an excellent foundation for almost any job within the museum industry because of my unique major/minor combination,” reflects Amancio. “My degree in art, science, and innovation has opened a lot of doors for me because it is so much more than art history, and it can be applied to a variety of areas, while also being able to contextualize important events and themes.”

She also says that her minors in psychology and education studies have proven valuable in helping her with programming.

After graduating, Amancio joined the WNDR Museum, a digital and interactive art museum, but has since taken her talents to the San Diego History Center as their lead visitor engagement associate.

The San Diego History Center focuses on the culture, history, and people of San Diego, California. Amancio’s role includes visitor operations, conducting extended research on current exhibits for engagement activities, and spearheading educational tours, all with the goal of making museums accessible to all.

“At the San Diego History Center, guests can truly see themselves represented in the exhibits, and that has been an incredibly special thing to witness,” says Amancio.

Throughout her journey, Amancio notes that Paula Burleigh, associate professor of art, and Heather Brand, associate professor of art, have been instrumental in her growth as a student and industry professional.

“Their courses and mentorship have been instrumental in my development as an artist and as a museum professional, and I am so grateful to have these two amazing women in my corner supporting me, even from across the country,” remarks Amancio.
