Scholarship Opportunities

An Allegheny Trustee Scholarship is awarded to you if you balance academic excellence with other distinctive activities during high school.

Scholarship amounts: $31,000 – $42,000 per year (up to $168,000 total over 4 years).

Renewal: Your Trustee Scholarship renews automatically for up to 4 years of full-time enrollment at Allegheny or in an Allegheny-sponsored off-campus study program. Because Allegheny encourages you to challenge yourself in the classroom and explore the entire curriculum, no minimum GPA is required to renew the scholarship.

Eligibility and selection: The Trustee Scholarships recognize your academic excellence along with your leadership, co-curricular involvement, community engagement, and other experiences and talents. Approximately half of applicants receive a Trustee Scholarship, with only a small number receiving the top scholarship each year. Both first-year and transfer students are eligible to receive a Trustee Scholarship.

To apply: Consideration for the Trustee Scholarship is automatic when you apply for admission under Early Decision (by November 1), Early Action (by December 1 and February 1), or Regular Decision (by February 15) methods. You will be notified via mail regarding your eligibility and the amount of your award. To qualify for this scholarship, you must be registered as a full-time, degree-seeking student.

Eligibility: A merit-based award that any student who submits an admissions application will be evaluated to receive. The award is based on a student’s demonstrated academic and personal growth during the admissions process. Guaranteed for eight semesters of full-time enrollment at Allegheny or for Allegheny-sponsored programs

And, when you refer a student, they will receive a $1,000 scholarship renewable for all 4 years, making a $4,000 total impact.

High school student eligibility:

• Apply by December 1 of their senior year of high school
• Submit their referral form by December 1
• Are admitted to Allegheny
• Submit their enrollment deposit by May 1 

Transfer student eligibility:

• Apply by December 1 for spring admission; apply by April 1 for fall admission
• Submit their referral form by December 1 for spring admission and April 1 for fall admission
• Are admitted to Allegheny
• Submit their enrollment deposit by January 1 for spring; deposit by August 1 for fall

More details:

• You must be an alum, current student, faculty or staff member, parent of a current student, or trustee of Allegheny College to refer a student.
• Allegheny Referral Scholarships are renewable for 4 years. 
• Students are only eligible to receive one Allegheny Referral Scholarship even if they are referred by multiple friends of the College.

You can refer students at any time to receive information about Allegheny; however, to be eligible for the scholarship, students must be referred and apply to the College by the above deadlines. 

Eligibility: You are encouraged to apply if you intend to minor in Dance & Movement Studies (DMS), or intend to participate regularly in dance activities or DMS coursework, which includes dance, yoga, martial arts, and creative expression.

Application requirements:

• One-page letter of intent, focused on how you see dance and movement practices as part of a liberal arts education
• A document that lists your dance and relevant movement and/or performance experience
• A brief video of your dance performance and/or choreography (no more than 5 minutes total); professional recordings are not necessary, but the submissions should be of sufficient quality to represent your work clearly

Recipients: As a recipient of this scholarship, you must enroll in at least one DMS course and participate in at least one DMS production during your first year. Continued activity each year is required to maintain the scholarship.

Eligibility: You are encouraged to apply if you intend to minor in Filmmaking or Journalism & Documentary Storytelling, or intend to participate in the Filmmaking program by taking FILM courses and/or participating in curricular and co-curricular Filmmaking.

Application requirements:

• One-page letter of intent, focused on how you see your work in filmmaking as part of a liberal arts education
• A document that lists your filmmaking and other relevant experiences
• Evidence of filmmaking ability, which may include:
  • Directing/producing a short film or clip from a longer project (no more than 10 minutes)
  • Acting for the camera in a short scene or series of clips (no more than 2 minutes)
  • A brief portfolio of your photography (no more than 5 minutes)

Recipients: As a recipient of this scholarship, you must enroll in at least one FILM course and participate during the first year (preferably during the first semester). Continued activity in courses and/or productions each year is required to maintain the scholarship.

Eligibility: You are encouraged to apply if you intend to minor in Music, or intend to participate regularly in instrumental or vocal ensembles.

Application requirements:

• A document that lists your music and other performance activities
• Recorded audition materials through video recording; professional recordings are not necessary, but the submissions should be of sufficient quality to be representative of your sound
• Instrumentalists should prepare two contrasting selections, or two movements from a larger work; solos that have been prepared for assessments or concerts are acceptable
• Vocalists should select two contrasting pieces, at least one of which is from the classical repertoire of art song, opera, or oratorio; selections should highlight your best range and preferably include two different languages

Recipients: As a recipient of this scholarship, you must enroll in at least one ensemble course (MUSIC 110-119) each semester. Continued activity in ensembles or other MUSIC courses each year is required to maintain the scholarship.

Eligibility: You are encouraged to apply if you intend to major or minor in Studio Art, or intend to take courses and participate actively in Student Art Society and/or BOXX Gallery activities and events.

Application requirements:

• One-page letter of intent focused on how you see your work in the Visual Arts as part of a liberal arts education
• Resume of Arts experiences
• Documentation of three Art-making experiences, which may include:
  • High-quality jpg images of 2-D or 3-D artworks made by you with descriptive captions stating the dimensions, medium(s) (e.g., drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, collage, sculpture, ceramics, etc.), date completed, and title of work
  • Evidence of your participation in a community Arts project (documentation via high-quality jpg photographs of the project and descriptive captions explaining your role)
  • YouTube or Vimeo links to videos created by you, and online links to interactive or iterative technology-based projects (e.g., games, bots, pages/sites, etc.)

Recipients: As a recipient of this scholarship, you must enroll in at least one 100-level Studio Art or Art & Technology course (ART 151, 155, 156, 165, 171, 181, 185) during your first year. You must also participate actively in Student Art Society and/or BOXX Gallery activities and events to maintain your scholarship.

Eligibility: You are encouraged to apply if you intend to major or minor in Theatre. Additionally, those who intend to participate in the Theatre program through participation in Playshop Theatre productions and/or taking THTR courses are encouraged to apply.

Application requirements:

• One-page letter of intent, focused on how you see your work in theatre as part of a liberal arts education
• A resume or document that lists theatre and other performance experiences
• Evidence of theatre ability, which may include the following areas:
  • Acting (one 2-minute monologue or two 1-minute monologues)
  • Design & Production (drawings and/or production photos)
  • Directing & Management (prompt book or brief performance video)
  • Dramaturgy & Criticism (research, analysis, and/or critical writing about plays or productions)

Recipients: As a recipient of this scholarship, you must enroll in at least one 100-level THTR course and participate in at least one Playshop Theatre production during the first year (preferably during the first semester). Continued activity in courses and/or productions each year is required to maintain the scholarship.

This scholarship is for eligible current students and incoming high school seniors or graduates of high schools located in Crawford, Venango, or Warren counties. Applications can be completed on Scholarship America’s website from typically from December until January.

This scholarship is for high school seniors living in Venango County who have completed a FAFSA. Applications will be sent out to eligible students from Scholarship America or their high school guidance counselor’s office.

The scholarship is available online to students entering their junior or senior year at a qualified 4-year college, majoring in an environmental concentration of engineering, science, or education, with preference given to graduates of Erie Cathedral Prep or a Crawford County high school. The board of directors accepts and reviews scholarship applications on a rolling basis, without static deadlines. Typically, they review applicants twice per year to align with fall and spring semester funding needs. Fall semester scholarship decisions are made around July, and spring semester scholarship decisions are made around December.

The American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Franklin Section is offering a scholarship to students residing or attending a college/university in Crawford, Erie, Forest, Mercer, Venango, or Warren counties, PA, and pursuing a career in civil engineering or transportation/highway related fields. Shirley Stuttler Scholarship Applications are due typically early April.

This foundation offers multiple scholarship opportunities to students within the Venango, Clarion, Forest, and Punxsutawney areas. More information is available at Bridge Builders Community Foundations.

Available for an outstanding junior in the top 5 percent of their class who has demonstrated significant contributions to Allegheny College through outstanding academic and extracurricular accomplishments and community service. The application can be found here.

Available to new first-year students, including international and undocumented students who choose to attend a CTCL-member college or university. Colleges That Change Lives Scholarship Applications are due typically early March, but admission letters to a CTCL-member college or university are due typically early April.

Multiple scholarship applications are available online through the Community Foundation of Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio. Eligible counties include Allegheny, Armstrong, Ashtabula, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Columbiana, Crawford, Erie, Forest, Lawrence, Mahoning, Mercer, Summit, Trumbull, Venango, Warren, and Westmoreland.

These scholarships offer merit-based grants to graduating seniors from any high school located in Crawford County, PA. Students with a 3.2 minimum GPA (based on a 4.0 scale) are invited to apply. Application packets are mailed to every school within Crawford County in January of each year and should be available from the guidance counselor or principal of your school.

Available through The Erie Community Foundation. Eligible students must be from northwestern PA. They also must be majoring in Psychology, Music, or Education at Allegheny College and must have completed their freshman year. Dr. Alfred W. Stone Scholarship Applications are due typically mid June.

The merit- and need-based scholarship program was established to assist Allegheny County students who are pursuing a full-time program leading to a bachelor’s degree at a college or university with awards of up to $15,000. Students must have resided in and have attended two academic years, and graduated from a high school or home school in Allegheny County, PA. (Students from Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Washington, and Westmoreland counties may also apply, but preference will be given to students of Allegheny County.) They must also provide verification of Protestant faith and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. Deadline for applications is typically early March, and awards are announced in June.

Multiple scholarship opportunities are available to residents of Erie, Crawford, Warren, Venango, and surrounding counties. Applications and deadlines can be found at Erie Community Foundation.

The Good Citizen Scholarship is reserved for students who have shown extraordinary commitment to community service and who have demonstrated creativity in shaping their volunteer activities. Each institution is asked to select one application to send to AICUP for the competition. If you believe you may be eligible for this opportunity, please fill out this application form and attach your essay (directions for the essay are on the application form). The deadline for turning in the completed application to the Financial Aid Office is the end of May. Please do not send applications directly to AICUP as they will not be accepted.

The Junior League of Pittsburgh is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through effective action and leadership. The JLP offers scholarships to female students to support its ongoing efforts toward a food-secure community. Requirements include a minimum of 100 hours volunteer service, GPA of at least a 3.0, completed application, and a one-page document describing how and why your interest in the causes and impacts of food insecurity have influenced your career goals and major.

Multiple scholarship opportunities are available to residents of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. Applications can be found at The Pittsburgh Foundation, and most deadlines are typically mid March to early April.

Phi Beta Kappa invites students to apply to this scholarship who expect to graduate in the Fall/Winter of 2023 to Spring 2025. Allegheny College is a chapter institution for Phi Beta Kappa. The Society will award Service Scholars with a $5,000 scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C. Applicants must have an interest in working in the public sector and show academic excellence (overall GPA of 3.5 or higher). Characteristics of ideal recipients include intellectual curiosity, interdisciplinary breadth and depth of arts and sciences coursework, leadership propensity, and service to others. Membership in the Society is not required. The Society will accept applications typically through mid January here. 

Available to residents of Venango County. Laura M. Smedley Applications are due typically mid June.

Numerous scholarships from this foundation are available on the foundation’s website page. Most scholarships are particular to western PA residents, some only for Allegheny County residents. Other requirements are listed for each individual scholarship online and are particular to that scholarship.

This scholarship is available to students who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Eligible majors are, Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, and Software), Engineering Technology, Machining, Manufacturing Operations, Supply Chain Management, Business, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Industrial Management, Information Technology, and engineering-related STEM majors planning to pursue a career in industry. Nordson BUILDS Scholarship Program Applications are due typically mid May.

Multiple scholarship opportunities are available to residents of Ashland County, OH. Applications can be found at Ashland County Community Foundation, and applications are due typically mid March.

This scholarship is available for an initiated undergraduate member of Phikeia or Legacy of a Brother of the PA Delta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta. The application is sent to Brothers of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity around spring break.

This scholarship is awarded to Pell-eligible students whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer. A public safety officer is:

• Any individual serving as an officially recognized or designated member of a legally organized volunteer fire department or police department, or an officially recognized or designated public employee of a legally organized fire or police department who was responding to a fire, rescue, or police emergency; or
• A fire police officer serving as an officially recognized or designated member of a legally organized public safety agency and who provides scene security or directs traffic in response to any fire drill, fire call, or other fire, rescue, or police emergency, or at a planned special event.

To qualify, students must be under 24 years of age or enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of their parent’s or guardian’s death, complete the FAFSA each year, and receive the Federal Pell Grant for that academic year. This $10,000 scholarship is available to undergraduate students for their education expenses if they create a Financial Literacy account with PNC. They award $120,000 annually around June 1 and December 1. View further information about the PNC Scholarship.

P.E.O. Chapter BG, a Mercer County service group, has a scholarship opportunity for young women in grade 12 called the Sara A. Winland Scholarship Program. Preference is given to Mercer County residents, but other students are also able to apply. Students who have overcome personal challenges, as demonstrated in their essays, will be prioritized. You can find the application here, and the deadline is typically the end of March.

This scholarship is available to first-generation college students (defined as someone whose parents have not completed a bachelor’s degree). All majors are encouraged to apply. More information and applications can be found on the scholarship website. The application deadline is typically the end of December.

Citizens offers various scholarships to students on a monthly basis to use for school expenses. You can find out more information about their monthly prize of $2,500 and the Grand Prize of $15,000 here. Citizens also offers a $2,500 quarterly prize for students who meet the criteria for the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Scholarship Prize (American Indian or Alaskan Native, African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino/a, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, women, member of the LGBTQ+ community, individual with disabilities, and/or a veteran).

Meadville Business and Professional Women’s Organization offers the Helen E. Remler Scholarship to a deserving individual demonstrating financial need and scholarship merit. Eligible students must be a resident of northwestern PA and have completed at least 1 year of college or half of their degree requirements. Application and official, unopened transcripts must be turned in typically mid March, to the organization.

The Educational Assistance Committee of Post 52 is offering educational assistance to eligible students of Crawford County. This educational assistance is open to anyone who has served/is currently serving in the United States Military and is also open to anyone who has a relative who has served/is currently serving in the United States Military.
