Italy’s Bay of Naples

May 16 – 26, 2028

An interdisciplinary travel experience centering on the Bay of Naples, one of Italy’s most ancient, complex, and fascinating regions.

Allegheny travelers begin in the historic center of Naples where they are introduced to the Greek city that gradually became one of Rome’s most important commercial and cultural centers. For over 1,000 years, Naples was one of Europe’s leading capitals, controlling Italy’s southern peninsula and Sicily. Contemporary Naples buzzes with culinary treasures, artistic wonders, and an infectious energy.

Our itinerary includes Naples’ dazzling history, art and architecture, food, performing traditions, and position as a destination and transit location for contemporary migrants. A day-trip to Pompeii unlocks the Roman city buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 and still one of the world’s most exhilarating and active archaeological sites. Our stay on Capri includes the pleasure palace of Emperor Tiberius, unforgettable walks with glorious views across the bay, and a private boat tour around the island. Finally, in Paestum we visit a stunning Greek city and its captivating temples while residing at a country hotel.
