Broaden Your Mind

At the Lawrence Lee Pelletier Library, you’ll find everything you need to satisfy your thirst for greater understanding. Home to many of our library collections and the Maytum Center for Student Success, it also provides a hub for research and learning outside the classroom. The team at the Library Services Desk and the Research Desk on the main floor of Pelletier is ready to help at a moment’s notice.

Research

You can easily access most Allegheny digital resources from anywhere. Most material will require an Allegheny ID and password to access. In addition, Pelletier Library houses about a quarter million books, archives, and other physical resources to support your research.

  • Journal Title Search: Search for journals by category or keyword.
  • Research Guides: Access guides to focus your research in any discipline.
  • Databases A-Z: Access databases like JSTOR, ProQuest Central, EBook Central, and The New York Times.

Research Support

The Research desk, facing the entrance to Pelletier, is staffed 3-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday whenever classes are in session. Librarians and trained assistants can help with all your research.
For in-depth help with any student research, students can schedule a one-on-one consultation with a research librarian. Consultations can be in person or via Google Meet.

Interlibrary Loan

Looking for items not available at Allegheny? No problem. The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) program is available at no charge to currently enrolled students and employees of Allegheny College.

General Policies & Procedures

  • It is inappropriate to use Interlibrary Loan to request textbooks or required reading for courses. Requesting textbooks or required reading for a class violates college policy and is an honor code violation.
  • Items should not be requested if they are available at Allegheny.
  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) materials cannot be renewed.
  • EZBorrow loans last 16 weeks. ILLiad loan periods are set by the lending library and can range from two weeks to an entire semester.
  • ILL services are available to currently enrolled students and employees of Allegheny College.
  • There is no charge for ILL services. However, overdue fines accrue at $1.00 per day.
  • Due dates are strictly enforced. Repeated failure to return ILL materials on time may result in limitations to a patron’s ILL privileges.
  • Students may be asked to consult a Research Librarian for help if they are placing requests for materials not usually useful in college work.
  • Patrons should supply the most complete citation information possible when submitting ILL requests. Unusable citations will be returned to the requester. Consult with the Research Librarians for help with citations.
  • Materials borrowed through ILL are subject to any policies or restrictions set by the lending library.
  • Materials (particularly journal articles) obtained through ILL are subject to copyright restrictions on their use. Copyright compliance in the use of materials is the responsibility of the person who borrows the material.
  • Requests are filled as quickly as possible. Delays may occur due to limited availability or mail delays.
  • Not all requests can be filled. If material is not obtainable, we will alert the requester as quickly as possible.
