Submission Guidelines
The Allegheny Review considers submissions from undergraduate writers year-round. Submit before October 15 to have your work considered for the issue published the following spring. We only consider digital submissions via our online Google submissions form found on this page.
The Allegheny Review only accepts submissions from currently enrolled undergraduate students. If your graduation year is approaching, please use an email address, physical address, and phone number that will be in use beyond graduation. We will need to reach you if your piece is accepted!
Please only send either one batch of up to five poems or twenty pages of prose per person during each annual submission period. Please note that we sometimes accept more than one piece per author.
We do consider simultaneous submissions. However, if part or all of your submission is accepted elsewhere, please let us know right away by emailing us at review@allegheny.edu.
Submission Format
Submissions must be in either PDF or Word format.
- Fiction – Not to exceed 20 pages, double-spaced.
- Poetry – Up to 5 poems
- Creative nonfiction – Not to exceed 20 pages, double-spaced
AI/LLM Policy for Submissions
For over four decades, The Allegheny Review has celebrated human intelligence and creativity, as well as the crucial humanity that shines through great undergraduate writing.
Our journal is not open to any submissions produced using generative AI or large language model programs, which we believe are inherently plagiaristic and work at the expense of uncompensated living authors. We are not open to works that have engaged AI processes at any stage, including in the descriptions, dialogue, titles, structures, elements of plot, etc.
If you claim authorship over a submission to The Allegheny Review, you have asserted that all the words and thoughts are your own and that you are submitting a work produced thanks to your own imagination.
