Study Away Scholarship Opportunities

The purpose of this fund is to provide support for students in Allegheny-approved study abroad programs (domestic programs are not eligible) to help defray expenses associated with your experience. 

Eligibility requirements:

• Enrolled as a full-time, undergraduate student in an Allegheny-approved study away program

To apply: You will be asked to describe how the study away experience will contribute to your academic and life goals, and how you envision being an “Allegheny Ambassador” while away.

The Blair Hanson Scholarship Fund was established in 1981 to honor the dedication of Dr. Blair Hanson, professor of French and chairperson of the Modern Languages Department, to the cause of language education. In 2022, the fund was expanded to honor the memory of Dr. Jochen Richter, professor of German, who retired in 2016 after more than 45 years of service to Allegheny and its students. 

In the spirit of Drs. Hanson and Richter, the Department of World Languages & Cultures awards this scholarship every spring to promote immersion in another language and culture as an important part of the Liberal Arts foreign language curriculum. The scholarship, awarded to an outstanding foreign language student, is to be used to defray part of the expenses of a semester- or year-long program for the next academic year.

The Boren scholarship provides you with opportunities to become more proficient in the cultures and languages of world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). Funding is available for the academic year, semester, and summer. Summer awards are available only in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Scholarship amounts: Maximum awards are $20,000. 

Eligibility requirements:

• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must be enrolled as an undergraduate in an accredited U.S. institution

Because Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), you must commit to working in the federal government for a minimum of 1 year in exchange for funding.

Eligibility requirements:

• You must be enrolled as a full-time, undergraduate student in Allegheny-approved study abroad programs
• While independent programs are eligible, all programs must be abroad and may not be domestic
• Only two students per semester may receive this award

The Gilman International Scholarship offers scholarships to students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. 

Scholarship amounts: Over 2,300 awards are offered of up to $5,000 to apply toward study abroad program costs.

If you are studying a critical need language (Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Swahili, Bahasa Indonesia, or Chinese, Indic, Persian, or Turkic languages), you are eligible for an additional $3,000 for a total possible award of $8,000.

Eligibility requirements:

• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must be an undergraduate student at a 2- or 4-year institution in the United States
• Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad
• Must be applying to a study abroad program eligible for credit at your institution
• Must be studying abroad for a minimum of 4 weeks

Scholarship amounts: The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

Eligibility requirements:

• A citizen of the United States
• Must be an undergraduate student at a 2- or 4-year institution in the United States
• Dependent child of an active duty military member(s) during the time of application in one of the following branches: Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, or Coast Guard
• Recipient of any type of Title IV federal financial aid
• Applying for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System

To apply: The application deadline is the beginning of October for programs between December and October of the next year. The application deadline for programs between May and April of the next year is the beginning of March.

This fund was created through the generosity of Judith A. Berges ’63 in memory of her parents, the Reverend and Mrs. Carl Edward Berges. The income from this fund is awarded to a student studying away to help defray educational expenses. If you are participating in Allegheny-sponsored study abroad programs (domestic or international), you may apply to the fund as a travel reimbursement award. As a recipient of the award, you will be asked to regularly contact the donor, once you are abroad, with news about your experience.

Eligibility requirements:

• GPA of 3.3 or above and planning to study abroad 
• Can demonstrate financial need 
• Have never previously studied abroad

Students participating in an independent program are not eligible for this award. 

International students at Allegheny who experience financial difficulty related to their studies at Allegheny should contact Global Education for information about a one-time award.

To apply: You will be asked to describe how the study away experience will contribute to your academic and life goals, and how you envision being an “Allegheny Ambassador” while away.

The income from this fund, established by William F. Tamplin ’35 and Mary A. Miller Tamplin ’35, is awarded to a rising junior or senior student to help defray the expenses of studying abroad (domestic programs are not eligible).

Eligibility requirements:

• You must be involved in campus and/or community activities
• You must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above
• No more than two recipients may be chosen per year

To apply: As a participant in an Allegheny-sponsored study abroad program (independent programs not eligible), you will need to provide a summary of your campus and community activities, a brief description of how your study away experience will contribute to your academic and/or professional goals, and how you envision being an “Allegheny Ambassador” while away.

This fellowship in International Studies, established in 1992, is intended to assist a student in study for a semester or summer abroad and to further thoughtful consideration of issues in International Relations. A significant goal of the Merrick Fellowship is to make the difference between a student’s being able or not being able to study abroad. It may be applied against a semester or summer study expenses. In certain circumstances, it could be used to help underwrite a student’s participation in an exceptional and related program in the United States. 

Eligibility requirements:

• You must be a promising Allegheny College upperclass student, preferably a junior 
• You must be majoring in International Studies
• In the absence of eligible International Studies majors, the fellowship may be awarded to promising students holding a double major in political science and history with an international emphasis
• While priority will be given to applicants intending to return to Allegheny to complete their undergraduate studies, consideration will also be given to recent graduates planning to study abroad
• Although the fellowship is intended to help outstanding students who could not otherwise afford a special educational experience, it is not limited to students on college financial aid

Letters should outline study abroad plans, academic and extracurricular activities, and other significant experiences including previous travel abroad and employment; an official copy of the applicant’s college transcript should also be supplied. Documentation of acceptance at a foreign university or to an established study abroad program will be valued.
