I initially joined the Bonner Program because it allowed me the opportunity to continue working in the community, even as I transitioned to a new part of my life when entering college. At a young age, I immersed myself in diverse cultures and communities through daily interactions when working with community members. When being in the community, people taught me their traditions and cultures, and I would teach them my own. Recognizing the community I came from, my own history has highlighted the need for intercultural skills within different communities across several sectors – from healthcare to education to organizations that support empowerment. I found the Allegheny Bonner Program providing me with this opportunity.
Being connected to the community, and forming the relationships I have today, are aspects of my life that I will carry with me throughout my college career and life. Through my time in the Bonner program, I have learned from the people around me and more about myself. Working with various communities allows me the opportunity to develop my interpersonal skills when communicating with various populations. Given the interconnectedness of communication across cultures, being culturally aware when communicating with individuals from diverse backgrounds builds community and a shared understanding, despite differences. I recognize this within my community, as we each bring an aspect of our culture. When facilitating meaningful conversations with community members, you understand the significance of working in the community, where you do not work for a community, rather you are working alongside them in meeting a greater need.
Prospective students should join the program because it provides students with a community upon arrival, where one does not feel alone or disconnected from the community despite being new. Through your time in the Bonner Program, you will meet and have people who support you and will be there for you throughout your time at Allegheny. One has the opportunity to build strong connections not only with their Bonner cohort but also with the Meadville community. When working in the community, you work closely with community members, building a supportive environment where you and community members support and inspire each other when fulfilling a greater purpose. Our supervisors serve as a valuable and meaningful resource, offering guidance and support for your academic, social, and emotional growth throughout your journey.
