Submission Guidelines

The Allegheny Review considers submissions from undergraduate writers year-round. Submit before October 15 to have your work considered for the issue published the following spring. We only consider digital submissions via our online Google submissions form found on this page.

The Allegheny Review only accepts submissions from currently enrolled undergraduate students. If your graduation year is approaching, please use an email address, physical address, and phone number that will be in use beyond graduation. We will need to reach you if your piece is accepted!

Please only send either one batch of up to five poems or twenty pages of prose per person during each annual submission period. Please note that we sometimes accept more than one piece per author.

We do consider simultaneous submissions. However, if part or all of your submission is accepted elsewhere, please let us know right away by emailing us at review@allegheny.edu.

Submission Format

Submissions must be in either PDF or Word format.

• Fiction – Not to exceed 20 pages, double-spaced.
• Poetry – Up to 5 poems
• Creative nonfiction – Not to exceed 20 pages, double-spaced

BACK ISSUES

($3 each, plus shipping). Back issues are available between 1983-2016, except: 1983, 1989, and 1999 have limited availability. 1985 is sold out.

SPECIAL EDITION

A few copies of the 1984 issue, featuring David Foster Wallace’s first published story, “The Piano in the Pantechnicon,” are available to collectors for $250.

From 2002 to 2021, The Allegheny Review awarded annual prizes in poetry and prose, judged by writers visiting campus for Allegheny’s Single Voice Reading series. Below are listed the winners and judges from those years.
