Description

The project began in fall of 2023. Professor Bethurem’s Environmental Science Methods & Statistics class worked in partnership with the City of Meadville to assess best placement for free-standing bike racks throughout downtown Meadville. City of Meadville and the City’s Environmental Advisory Council engaged additional partners including Craig Newell Welding in Cambridge Springs for custom fabrication and the Crawford County Career & Technical Center’s drafting and welding programs for logo design and fabrication. In December of 2023, Prof. Bethurem’s class presented their findings. Fabrication is currently underway (January 2024) and installation will occur in spring 2024 or when the weather is appropriate.

Outcome

Based on criteria determined in class and investigated through Geographic Information Systems technology, the students identified 137 exact locations out of a possible 630 within the study area to locate rack installation, from which 25 are selected to install the bike racks purchased through this sub-grant. Additionally, the Crawford County Career and Technical Center for the design of the City of Meadville logo to be adhered to the bike racks, further enhancing our community student engagement.
