Theatre Major and Minor
Allegheny Theatre students learn to engage critically and creatively with the wider culture that surrounds them, producing original work and developing skills to connect with audiences in compelling ways.
Your Four-Year Journey
Students often combine a Theatre major with a minor in Business, English, Environmental Science & Sustainability, History, or Psychology.
Most majors take all three introductory courses: Introduction to Theatre, Theatre Production (you can focus on scenery, costumes, or lighting), and Acting 1. You can also participate in Playshop Theatre productions as soon as your first year at Allegheny.
In your second year, you’ll take Text and Performance, a Theatre Elective course (Acting, Directing, Production Design, Management, or Theatre History), and begin your selected Module of Inquiry. The three modules are Media, Politics, and Technology; Popular Culture and Civic Life; and Digital Storytelling. Most majors complete their first Practicum, which is integrated with a Playshop Theatre production.
The show must go on! As you move into your third year, you will take Theatre History 1 or 2, the Junior Seminar, a Theatre Elective, and continue your selected Module of Inquiry. Most majors complete their second Practicum, which is integrated with a Playshop Theatre production.
To round out your time at Allegheny, you will complete Theatre Electives and Module of Inquiry as well as complete the Theatre Senior Comp, often integrated with a Playshop Theatre production or produced by Student Experimental Theatre (SET). Then you're all set to go out into the world -- break a leg!
