2007 Golden Gator Golf Outing Recap

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Sunny skies, a mild temperature and low winds prevailed at the 13th annual Allegheny College Golden Gator Golf Outing. The round was  played on a beautifully manicured course, The Country Club of Meadville, a course that hosted the Western Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur a day before. Mother Nature looked fondly on the 120 golfers, as the skies stayed clear for the entire round and the post-event activities, and opened up with a short rain, watering the course 30 minutes after the conclusion of the final event.

Among the highlighted par 3’s, was the 13th hole where Director of Athletics and Recreation Betsy Mitchell faced off against every foursome, hitting a shot per group, and golfers that were on the green and closer to the hole than Mitchell’s shot on that hole received a prize t-shirt. The A.D.’s strong golf game won out, as only 42 of the golfers bested Mitchell, leaving the remaining 78 without the prize.

At the conclusion of the round, ten tickets were drawn for contestants in the Wesbury United Methodist Community $20,000 putt challenge, where players had to hit 10-, 30- and 50-foot putts in succession to win the 20-grand. Three golfers made the opening 10-foot putt, but none of the trio was able to sink their 30-foot putt attempt, and could not move on to the final shot.

After the putting contest, action moved inside where a light dinner was served. The indoor program, emceed by legendary Pittsburgh Steelers radio broadcaster Bill Hillgrove, was started by Head Athletic Trainer Jaime Plunkett presenting the Norm Sundstrom Friend of Allegheny Athletics Award. The award, which symbolizes the same community spirit of Norm Sundstrom, former coach and athletics director, was presented to longtime Allegheny supporter Art Cocolin.

The Robert Garbark Alumni Award, presented annually by the Golden Gator Club to a graduate whose love for Allegheny College athletics best embodies the competitive spirit of the great Robert Garbark, was presented by Head Football Coach Mark Matlak to 1976 graduate Dave Malone. A special thank-you by Mitchell followed, to former Director of Athletics and current Associate Vice President for Finance and Planning Larry Lee for his work on the recently renovated Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

The evening concluded with the team prizes, as the team of Graham Hoffman, Jack Cline, Jr., Marty Wrigley and George Hagstrom won the gross score section by shooting a 17-under 55. The foursome of Hillgrove, Rich Huzicko, Brian Nageotte and Don Clawson took top spot in the par quota, while the group of Mark Moninger, John Brady, Phil Huffman and Tim Brady won the tournament’s only skin.

The outing, kicked off the College’s Reunion Weekend in grand style and gave all alumni a chance to not only see familiar faces and talk about old times, but to also reconnect with Gator athletics and share in the pride of the program’s recent accomplishments. On behalf of the Allegheny Athletic Department, we thank everyone for attending and for their support, and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
