Allegheny Creative & Performing Arts Scholarships

Thank you for your interest in the Allegheny Creative & Performing Arts Scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based upon a student’s intended level of participation and performance ability. Students who plan to major or minor in a creative or performing art are eligible, as are those who plan to participate in related extracurricular performances and/or take courses in the department (specific criteria is outlined below). The Award is $1000 and is renewable based upon continued participation.

Submission Deadline
Submissions are for students that plan to enroll at Allegheny in Fall 2024. Students may only apply for one scholarship.

Priority Deadline: January 5, 2024
Final Deadline: February 15, 2024 (deadline has been extended to March 15)

Dance & Movement Studies

Eligibility:

Applicants who intend to minor in Dance & Movement Studies, as well as those who intend to participate regularly in dance activities or DMS coursework, which includes dance, yoga, martial arts, and creative expression, are encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements:

    1. 1-page letter of intent, focused on how applicant sees dance and movement practices as part of a liberal arts education;
    2. A document that lists dance and relevant movement and/or performance experience;
    3. A brief video of dance performance and/or choreography (no more than 5 minutes total); professional recordings are not necessary, but the submissions should be of sufficient quality to represent your work clearly.

Recipients:
Scholarship recipients must enroll in at least one DMS course and participate in at least one DMS production during the first year and continued activity each year is required to maintain the scholarship.

Filmmaking

Eligibility:
Applicants who intend to minor in Filmmaking or Journalism & Documentary Storytelling, as well as those who intend to participate in the Filmmaking program by taking FILM courses and/or participating in curricular and co-curricular Filmmaking, are encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements:

    1. A one-page letter of intent, focused on how applicant sees their work in filmmaking as part of a liberal arts education;
    2. A document that lists filmmaking and other relevant experiences;
    3. Evidence of filmmaking ability, which may include:
      a)Directing/production (a short film or clip from a longer project – no more than 10 minutes)
      b)Acting for the camera (a short scene or series of clips – no more than 2 minutes)
      c) A brief portfolio of photography (no more than 5 minutes)

Recipients:
Scholarship recipients must enroll in at least one FILM course and participate during the first year (preferably during the first semester) and continued activity each year in courses and/or productions is required to maintain the scholarship.

Music

Allegheny student instrumental ensemble rehearsal
Eligibility:
Applicants who intend to minor in Music, as well as those who intend to participate regularly in instrumental or vocal ensembles, are encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements:

  • A document that lists music and other performance activities;
  • Recorded audition materials through video recording; professional recordings are not necessary, but the submissions should be of sufficient quality to be representative of your sound.
    • Instrumentalists should prepare two contrasting selections, or two movements from a larger work. Solos that have been prepared for assessments or concerts are acceptable.
    • Vocalists should select two contrasting pieces, at least one of which is from the classical repertoire of art song, opera, or oratorio. Selections should highlight the singer’s best range and preferably include two different languages.

Recipients:
Scholarship recipients must enroll in at least one ensemble course (MUSIC 110-119) each semester and continued activity each year in ensembles or other MUSIC courses is required to maintain the scholarship.

Studio Art

Eligibility:
Applicants who intend to major or minor in Studio Art, as well as those who intend to take courses and participate actively in Student Art Society and/or BOXX Gallery activities and events, are encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements:

  1. 1-page letter of intent focused on how applicant sees their work in the Visual Arts as part of a liberal arts education;
  2. Resume of Arts experiences;
  3. Documentation of three Art-making experiences which may include:
    • high quality jpg images of 2-D or 3-D artworks made by the applicant with descriptive captions stating the dimensions, medium(s)(e.g. drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, collage, sculpture, ceramics, etc.), date completed, and title of work;
    • evidence of participation in a community Arts project (documentation via high quality jpg photographs of the project and descriptive captions explaining the applicant’s role);
    • YouTube or Vimeo links to videos created by the applicant, and online links to interactive or iterative technology-based projects (e.g. games, bots, pages/sites, etc.).

Recipients:
Recipients are encouraged to enroll in at least one 100-level Studio Art or Art & Technology course (ART 151, 155, 156, 165, 171, 181, 185) during their first year and participate actively in Student Art Society and/or BOXX Gallery activities and events to maintain their scholarship.

Theatre

Allegheny student theatre production
Eligibility:
Applicants who intend to major or minor in Theatre, as well as those who intend to participate in the Theatre program through participation in Playshop Theatre productions and/or taking THTR courses, are encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements:

    1. A 1-page letter of intent, focused on how applicant sees their work in theatre as part of a liberal arts education;
    2. A resume or document that lists theatre and other performance experiences;
    3. Evidence of theatre ability, which may include for the following areas:
      a)Acting (one 2-minute monologue or two 1-minute monologues)
      b)Design & Production (drawings and/or production photos)
      c)Directing & Management (prompt book or brief performance video)
      d)Dramaturgy & Criticism (research, analysis, and/or critical writing about plays or productions).

Recipients:
Scholarship recipients must enroll in at least one 100-level THTR course and participate in at least one Playshop Theatre production during the first year (preferably during the first semester) and continued activity each year in courses and/or productions is required to maintain the scholarship.
