Apply To Study Off-Campus Independently
Application Deadline for Spring programs: September 20 by 5 p.m.--If the 20th falls on the weekend then the application will be due the Friday before the deadline.

September 18, 2009: Approval packet deadline; deadline for submission of Allegheny study abroad scholarship applications.

If approved to study off campus through an Allegheny Sponsored Program, please choose to attend one orientation meeting from each of the three sections (A, B, & C) below.
If approved to study off campus independently, please choose to attend one orientation meeting from each sections B & C only.
Section A
Pre-registration is required for this section of the EXL 300 Pre-Departure Meetings. Sign up sheets for meetings in this section will be available at the International Office in Reis Hall upon notification of acceptances.
Dates and Times for Section A Pre-Departure Meetings to be announced shortly.
Section B
October 5 or 8: first required pre-departure meeting (receive applications for Allegheny-sponsored programs, Allegheny participation forms, visa and passport information)
Section C
October 20 or 23: second required pre-departure meeting (discuss health and safety, meet returned students, etc.)

The Reverend and Mrs. Berges International Fund
A fund created through the generosity of Judith A. Berges '63 in memory of her parents, the Reverend and Mrs. Carl Edward Berges. The income from this fund is awarded to an international student or to a student studying abroad to help defray educational expenses. The recipient is selected by a committee consisting of Dean of Students; Dean of the College; and Director, International Programs and Services. Candidates for the award need not be language majors.
Allegheny students participating in Allegheny-sponsored study abroad programs may apply to the fund as a travel reimbursement award. All students of higher academic achievement (GPA of 3.3 or above) who are planning to study abroad and demonstrate financial need are eligible, provided they have never previously studied abroad. Recipients of the award are asked to regularly contact the donor once they are abroad, with news about their experience.
Study abroad applicants should submit a brief essay describing how the international experience would contribute to their academic and life goals, and how they envision being an "Allegheny Ambassador" abroad. Essays should be submitted in an envelope marked "Berges Application" to Jenny Kawata, International Programs and Services, Box Y. They should be submitted with the Approval Packet for Off-Campus Study (February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs). International students at Allegheny who experience financial difficulty related to their studies at Allegheny should contact the Director of International Programs and Services for information about a one-time award.
Blair Hanson Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in 1981 to honor the dedication of Dr. Blair Hanson, Professor of French and Chairperson of the Modern Languages Department, to the cause of language education. The scholarship, awarded annually to an outstanding foreign language student, is to be used to defray part of the expenses of a period of study abroad. Candidates for the award need not be language majors. For more information, contact Professor Peter Ensberg of the Modern Languages Department (Ruter 105).
Wayne Reynolds Merrick Fellowship
This fellowship in International Studies, established in 1992, is intended to assist promising Allegheny College upperclass students, preferably juniors, majoring in International Studies, to study for a semester or summer abroad. In the absence of eligible International Studies majors, the fellowship may be awarded to promising students holding a double major in political science and history with an international emphasis. While priority will be given to applicants intending to return to Allegheny to complete their undergraduate studies, consideration will also be given to recent graduates planning to study abroad.
A significant goal of the Merrick Fellowship is to make the difference between a student's being able or not being able to study abroad. It may be applied against a semester or summer study expenses. In certain circumstances, it could be used to help underwrite a student's participation in an exceptional and related program in the United States. In all instances, it is intended to further thoughtful consideration of issues in International Relations. Although the fellowship is intended to help outstanding students who could not otherwise do so afford a special educational experience, it is not limited to students on college financial aid.
Applicants for the Wayne Reynolds Merrick Fellowship should write to Professor Shannan Mattiace, by April 15, at Box 109, Allegheny College. Letters should outline study abroad plans, academic and extracurricular activities, and other significant experiences including previous travel abroad and employment; an official copy of the applicant's college transcript should also be supplied. Documentation of acceptance at a foreign university or to an established study abroad program will be valued.
According to the terms of the endowment, the selection of the fellowship recipient will be determined by a committee consisting of the individual responsible for the off-campus study program, the academic dean, and chaired by the person serving as chair of the International Studies Major Program committee. It will be the selection committee's responsibility to seek input from the members of the International Studies Major Program committee and from the Financial Aid Office.
Christine Scott Nelson '73 Study Abroad Expense Fund
The purpose of this fund will be to provide stipends for students in Allegheny-approved study abroad programs to help defray expenses associated with the experience. Only those students who are enrolled as full-time, undergraduate students in Allegheny-approved study abroad programs will be eligible recipients. Recipients will be selected by the Office of International Programs and Services in consultation with the Office of Financial Aid. The term of the award is for one semester or one year, depending upon the study abroad program in which the student participates.
Study abroad applicants should submit a brief but thoughtful essay describing how the international experience is related to their academic and/or professional goals, and how they envision being an "Allegheny Ambassador" abroad. Essays should be submitted in an envelope marked "Nelson Fund Application" to Jenny Kawata, International Programs and Services, Box Y. They should be submitted with the Approval Packet for Off-Campus Study (February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs). The Tamplin Fund
The income from this fund, established by William F. Tamplin '35 and Mary A. Miller Tamplin '35, is to be awarded to a rising junior or senior student involved in campus activities and with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better, to help defray the expenses of studying abroad.
No more than two recipients may be chosen each year. Recipients will contact the donor once abroad (by mail) to describe what the award has enabled them to accomplish. The recipient is selected by a committee consisting of directors of the following offices: Student Activities; Community Service and Service Learning; International Programs and Services.
Allegheny students participating in Allegheny-sponsored study abroad programs may apply to the fund by submitting a resume with their campus and community activities, a brief essay describing how the international experience would contribute to their personal and professional goals, and how they envision being an "Allegheny Ambassador" abroad. Essays should be submitted in an envelope marked "Tamplin Fund" to Jenny Kawata, International Programs and Services, Box Y. They should be submitted with the Approval Packet for Off-Campus Study (February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs).
